Butterfly Beauty

May 2020,

Good afternoon,

I am silly and I thought Mother's Day was closer to the 15th instead of this weekend! I knew that I wanted to send my best friend a card as she lost her son unexpectedly last year. This will be her first Mother's Day without him. As with many people whenever she sees a butterfly she says that that is him. She has loved butterflies for as long as I know her so....on Monday I got busy and made her a card. I hope it gets to her by Friday. Update: She received the card and cried a bit and also smiled. She loved getting the card. People love getting cards in the mail. Sometimes I have a hard time giving cards away - the ones that I made and especially love - but I have to remember what it will mean to those receiving them. I have to work on that!

I used black card stock - 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" folded at 4 1/4".
 white card stock for the inside - 8 1/4" X 5 1/4"
double sided card stock for the front 5 1/4" X 4" (I used DSP from last year's Sale-A-Bration   called  Botanical Butterfly but you can use any kind of double sided paper as you will see).

On the back side of the printed paper make a pencil mark at 2 5/8" and draw a light pencil line in 2". Using scissors cut in 2" and then fold the pieces back making sure to get a point at the corners. Use a bone folder to get a crisp crease and then adhere the flaps done. Stamp your sentiment centered in the middle of 2 5/8"  and to the left side (you can place your printed paper on to the card front to line it up where you want it). TIP:  Stamp before you adhere the paper just in case you make a mistake. After stamping adhere the paper to the card front.

For the white card stock on the inside of the card, measure and put a little pencil mark on the back at 2 1/4" , 4 1/8" and 6". On the 4 1/8" mark, measure down and put a pencil mark at 3". Fold the paper in half ( 4 1/8" ) and then gently and carefully fold the 2" to 3" and the 6" to 3" lines making sure that they meet up at the 3" mark. Note: You can always score the two lines/folds if you find it easier. Hold the folded card at the bottom and encourage the two diagonal folds to fold to the inside of the card along with the top fold of the middle line. Once it is all folded, use your bone folder to make the folds crisp and neat. The crisper the folds the better the card will pop out in the middle!

Open the card and with the white card folded put adhesive onto the side looking up at you. Make sure that it is centered top and bottom and also butted up to the card fold and close the card. Open the card and put adhesive on to the remaining side. Close the card again and when you open the card everything is adhered and the top automatically folds out.

The next step is to do the butterflies. They are made with the Butterfly Beauty dies. I must admit that for me they were a bit of an investment but I will never need another butterfly die!

There are 20 dies and I cut out the two large layer dies for you to see. I like that you can also cut them apart and use them separately as I did for my card.

I used the thinner die to cut out black card stock on an adhesive sheet. Conversely, you could put some glue on to a sponge and dab it on or put very small drops of glue on the back to adhere it. I prefer the adhesive sheets as I don't have to worry about any glue showing and I also know that it will be stuck down everywhere.
I wanted the butterflies to have different colours so I didn't use a coloured piece of card stock. I cut out a white piece and sponged the different colours on. Some of the pieces are very thin so I just dabbed the colour on them. I knew that you would be able to see the back of the two large butterflies so I dabbed some ink there as well.

After attaching the two layers, I cut all but the large and top left butterfly apart.

On the (looking at the card) left side of the score line of the pop out hold the left side of the large butterfly with your fingers and close the card. The two butterflies should lie flat and not show. When you are sure of the position use some glue to adhere the bottom left side of the large butterfly.

All that is left to do is to stamp your sentiment, attach the other 3 butterflies where you want them and add any embellishments if desired. I used the Waterfront stamp set for my sentiments.

I know that this was a long post but the card is well worth making and the Butterfly Beauty dies are well worth the price!

Stay safe and happy crafting,

Mary
